# EPA 608 for data-center CRAH and chiller work

Anyone who works on cooling equipment that holds refrigerant needs a federal certification. EPA Section 608 certification is the federal credential required for anyone who maintains, services, repairs or disposes of equipment that could release refrigerants. In a data center that means the HVAC/R techs on CRAH/CRAC units and chillers. IT roles that never open a refrigerant circuit don't need it. You earn it by passing an EPA-approved test, and EPA says it does not expire.

## The four certification types
- Type I: Servicing small appliances.
- Type II: Servicing or disposing of high- or very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs.
- Type III: Servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances.
- Universal: Servicing all types of equipment.

## How to get it
1. **Confirm the work needs it**: If you will attach gauges, add or remove refrigerant, or otherwise open a refrigerant circuit on CRAH/CRAC units, chillers or other cooling equipment, EPA defines you as a technician and you must be certified. Server, network and other IT roles do not do this work.
2. **Pick the certification type**: EPA has four types: Type I (small appliances), Type II (high- and very high-pressure appliances), Type III (low-pressure appliances) and Universal (all types). Each test covers the Core section plus its type. Check which equipment you will service; Universal covers all of it.
3. **Find an EPA-approved certifying organization**: Tests must be given by an EPA-approved certifying organization. EPA lists them on its Section 608 Technician Certification Programs page. EPA does not publish a fee; each program sets its own.
4. **Study the EPA test topics**: EPA publishes the topics for the Core, Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 tests, including refrigerant types, the venting prohibition, recovery and leak-repair rules.
5. **Take the exam proctored if you want Universal**: EPA says a Core test taken open book cannot count toward Universal certification. The Core must be taken proctored to earn Universal.
6. **Keep your card**: The credential does not expire. EPA does not issue or replace cards; the certifying organization that tested you keeps the record and issues replacements.

## FAQ
**Do data-center HVAC techs need EPA 608?** Yes, if they maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants, such as CRAH/CRAC units and chillers. EPA regulations at 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F require certification. IT staff who do not open refrigerant circuits do not need it.

**What are EPA 608 Type I, II, III and Universal?** Type I covers small appliances. Type II covers high- or very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs. Type III covers low-pressure appliances. Universal covers all types of equipment.

**Does EPA 608 certification expire?** No. EPA states that Section 608 Technician Certification credentials do not expire.

**Who gives the EPA 608 exam?** An EPA-approved certifying organization. EPA itself does not give the test or issue cards. EPA lists approved programs on its website.

**Can an apprentice work on refrigerant equipment without EPA 608?** Yes, but only while closely and continually supervised by a certified technician. EPA exempts apprentices under that condition.

**How much does the EPA 608 test cost?** EPA does not publish a fee. Each approved certifying organization sets its own price, so check with the program you choose.
