# How to get into data-center work as a tradesperson

1. **Pick the trade BLS tracks.** Electrician apprenticeship; HVAC/R postsecondary nondegree plus long-term OJT; lineworker long-term OJT; pipefitter apprenticeship (BLS EP 2025-35 training labels).
2. **Baseline credential.** Multi-year apprenticeship (electrical/pipe) or certificate path (HVAC). EPA Section 608 for refrigerants. State electrician licenses where required. Oregon LEA or Washington specialty 06 for limited-energy work in those states.
3. **Critical-facility skills.** UPS/generators, switchgear, CRAH/CRAC/chillers, liquid-cooling CDUs; OEM short courses on top of the trade ticket.
4. **Hiring pools.** Openings/yr: electricians ~72.7k, HVAC/R ~40.6k, pipefitters/plumbers ~42k, lineworkers ~10.9k (BLS EP 2025-35).

## Which trade fits what you want to work on

| Work on | Trade | Typical training | Required by law |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power: UPS, generators, switchgear, PDUs | Electrician (47-2111) | Apprenticeship | State electrical license where required |
| Refrigerant cooling: CRAH/CRAC, chillers | HVAC/R (49-9021) | Postsecondary nondegree + long-term OJT | EPA Section 608 (federal) |
| Water/glycol loops | Pipefitter (47-2152) | Apprenticeship | State rules; not EPA 608 unless refrigerant is opened |
| Utility feed | Lineworker (49-9051) | Long-term OJT / utility apprenticeship | Employer safety training |
| Fiber and structured cabling | Limited-energy / low-voltage | Electrical or limited-energy apprenticeship | OR LEA or WA 06 in those states |

## Hours and tests you can plan around
- **EPA Section 608:** test from an EPA-approved certifying organization (Type I, II, III or Universal). EPA says it does not expire.
- **Oregon Limited Energy Technician, Class A:** apprenticeship, or 432 classroom hours plus 6,000 OJT hours, or 12,000 out-of-state hours including protective signaling. $50 license fee; renews every 3 years.
- **Washington specialty electrician 06:** 4,000 supervised hours plus 48 hours of basic classroom training, then a PSI-run exam after L&I approval.
- **BICSI INSTF:** written plus hands-on exam; BICSI training is not required to sit it.

## FAQ
- **Do I need IT experience?** No. Facility trades own power, cooling, piping and cable plant; IT owns servers and software.
- **Do I need EPA 608?** Only if you service refrigerant equipment (CRAH, chillers).
- **Is NFPA 70E a license?** No. It is a consensus safety standard employers use; the 2027 edition took effect 2026-05-06.
- **Can I sit BICSI INSTF without BICSI training?** Yes. Field experience or another approved pathway also qualifies.
